Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) is the oldest collegiate food service in the country, serving over 5 million meals annually.  HUDS focuses on infrastructure and food sourcing as opportunities to “green” its operations and works closely with the Harvard University Green Campus Initiative.  Recently, HUDS has reduced water usage by up to 80% and achieved better than 95% recycling of construction debris/materials in its most recent three renovations.  Also, the newly renovated 5,100 SF kitchen at Dunster/ Mather dining halls is under review to become the first LEED certified commercial kitchen. In addition, HUDS also uses local buying as its guiding factor and offers seasonal menus to maximize the potential for local purchasing.

sterling planet

Sterling Planet is the nation’s leading retail provider of solar, wind and other clean, renewable energy through direct sales and electric utility partnerships.  Sales to date have created environmental benefits comparable to not driving 5.7 billion miles or taking 460,000 cars off U.S. roads.  Founded in 2000, Sterling Planet was the first company to offer renewable energy certificates to every U.S. home and business as a way to support sustainable energy production that benefits the environment, the economy and society in general.  Today, Sterling Planet has 28 utility partners nationwide in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and elsewhere.  The company is also exploring emerging clean energy markets, maintaining a focus on businesses, universities and clients seeking LEED credits for green building certification.

Sterling Planet is offering 10% of to-date Harvard’s renewable energy purchases to cover students scholarships in support of students who would not be otherwise able to attend the Sustainability Conference in April!

The Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE) encourages research and education about the environment and its many interactions with human society.  The Center draws its strength from faculty members and students across the University who make up a remarkable intellectual community of scholars, researchers, and teachers of diverse fields including chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, engineering and applied sciences, biology, public health and medicine, government, business, economics, religion, and the law.  The most pressing problems facing our natural environment are complex, often requiring collaborative investigation by scholars versed in different disciplines.  By connecting scholars and practitioners from different disciplines, the Center for the Environment seeks to raise the quality of environmental research at Harvard and beyond.

Thanks to the HUCE's generous contribution more than a hundred students will be able to attend the conference!

zipcar

Zipcar’s service has had a significant, positive impact on the environment and local communities. According to a recent member survey, drivers who use Zipcar as an alternative to owning a car ultimately spend less time behind the wheel and, in many cases, have surrendered ownership of their vehicles or have halted their purchasing decision.

  • Each Zipcar takes over 20 personally-owned vehicles off the road.
  • Since each Zipcar takes over 20 cars off the road, less land and financial resources are needed to provide parking infrastructure.
  • Zipcar members are more likely to shop locally.
  • Zipcar members drove 5295 miles/year prior to joining Zipcar. The average Zipcar member currently drives only 369 miles/year.
  • Members of Zipcar and car sharing programs report a 14% increase in public transit trips, a 10% increase in bicycling trips and a 26% increase in walking trips.
  • At Zipcar’s current membership adoption rates, Zipcar and other agencies anticipate that well over 10% of an urban population will participate in Zipcar’s car sharing service.
