GEOTHERMAL AT HARVARD

Ground source heat pump systems take advantage of the constant temperature of the earth at shallow depths to serve as a heat source or sink for a building. When used for heating and cooling, these systems are much more efficient than conventional fossil fuel or electric based space conditioning. Harvard has six ground source heat pump systems on campus, at the following locations:

  • 1 Francis Avenue90 Mt. Auburn
  • 2 Arrow Street
  • 46 Blackstone Street
  • 90 Mt. Auburn
  • Quadrangle Recreation and Athletic Center
  • Radcliffe Gym

Ground source heat pump systems are planned for the Weld Hill Laboratory at the Arnold Arboretum and for Byerly Hall.

Harvard Green Campus Initiative and Harvard University Operations Service's Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities Maintenance groups have worked closely with well owners and with each other to develop a "lessons learned" presentation. This document collects the lessons learned at the six existing ground source heat pump installations at Harvard for the benefit of future well owners.
