Green Campus Building Services - Existing Buildings

Why Existing Buildings?

In the United States, existing buildings consume an incredible amount of energy and water resources. According to the US Energy Information Administration, commercial and residential buildings in the US consume over 20 Trillion BTUs (British Thermal Units) per year. For those of you not used to thinking in BTUs, that's a lot of energy. As a result, buildings account for nearly half of all energy consumed in the country and over 75% of all electricity produced. Because the vast majority of this energy is generated by burning fossil fuels, buildings have become a critical focus in the global imperative to reduce carbon emissions.

The Harvard Fact Book reports that Harvard University owns and operates over 600 buildings, totaling over 23,000,000 square feet. With a diverse portfolio of buildings types, the need to quantify and monitor energy consumption is growing as property managers and university officials plan for ways to reduce consumption.

GCBS-EB: Our Mission...

Develop long-term partnerships across the University to provide professional services that increase building energy performance and lower operational costs associated with energy consumption, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and demonstrating green technologies. Our challenge is to transform every Harvard owned property into a model of high performance operations through calculated investments in efficiency upgrades. Although Harvard is only one institution, the University is setting strong examples of innovative solutions to manage energy consumption in its existing buildings.
