Green Office: Recycling

Recycling

Leaf One

Leaf One

  • There are recycling bins in all common areas where trash bins are present, such as in kitchens, break rooms, conference rooms, mailrooms, and copy rooms. [Suggested Bins]
  • In our office, recycling signs are clearly posted on or near recycling bins. [Recycling & Trash Signs]
  • We spent several minutes reviewing proper recycling practices at a recent staff meeting to ensure that all members of our office are aware of the rules and had their questions answered.
  • We provide recycling bins at events and meetings sponsored by our office.
  • When we need to dispose of office furniture and equipment, we contact Facilities/Operations to see if it can be salvaged and reused elsewhere.

  • Each work area (cube or office) has a desk-side paper recycling bin. [Suggested Bins]

  • In our office, department, or building we have at least one recycling collection bin for small electronic waste: CFLs, CDs, audio tapes, batteries, cell phones, pagers, PDAs, and inkjet printer cartridges. This collection area has been publicized and signs exist explaining what can be recycled here. If our office uses Harvard Recycling, we contacted Rob Gogan, Supervisor of FMO Recycling and Solid Waste Removal, to obtain a labeled “Batteries Plus” bucket for small electronic waste if necessary [617-495-3042 or rob_gogan@harvard.edu]
  • We bring our large electronic waste (computers, laptops, printers, A/V, office phones, etc.) to IT services or the A/V provider for our area so that it may be recycled properly by Harvard Recycling (if they are our provider).
  • If our building is not cleaned by FMO or connected to Harvard Recycling, we contacted our building manager to discuss best practices for recycling these above items.

  • We recycle inkjet and laser jet cartridges (any brand) through Office Max, either by giving them to our driver or by using an OfficeMax-provided toner return box, available from gailbell@officemax.com. As another option, we know we can recycle our laser printer cartridges by sending them back to their manufacturer.
