Structuring for Longevity
Administrative partners will be the key to the long-term survival of any new campus program. Students come and go, and while their clubs and organizations may persist, leadership changes periodically along with funding and priorities. In order for a green living program (GLP) or student internship program (SIP) to survive over the long haul, it will need an administrative framework that will not collapse when leadership changes or funding dries up.
Ideally, a department with an existing focus on campus greening would host the prospective GLP or SIP. In addition to logistical support, it could serve as a local reservoir of ideological support and guidance for program personnel. If a campus greening organization is not present, then program developers should look for academic or administrative departments whose orientation is somehow aligned with the program goals. For example, an environmental science, facilities management or student affairs department might be a suitable host. During your talks with staff in these and other suitable departments, probe the possibility of a hosting arrangement.
