Payroll
Paying the student workers in a green living program (GLP) is a key to its strength. For this reason, try to find an administrative home that supports payroll procedures. If you plan to base yourself in another department, consider a few questions:
- How does the department's payroll structure work?
- Is there a financial administrator who can teach you the financial system?
- Is there a human resources administrator who can help with issues like health benefits?
- What is the time-reporting structure of this department? Of the university as a whole?
If you cannot access an existing payroll system, find out from your university’s human resources or payroll department what you must do to establish your own. Be sure to ask about the requirements for the coordinator position and student positions, including tax and employment forms.
Office Needs
Finding a physical space to use as the home base for your GLP will make the program feel more official. Some standard office-related needs include the following:
- desk space
- computer and phone
- storage space
- meeting areas
Be creative about meeting your space needs. For example, perhaps you and the program's student employees can gather in a centrally-located dorm with a common room. Between events, some art supplies can be stored by GLP captains and larger supplies by the recycling department or another campus organization.
