Why Do It?
Is it is important to build a strong profile for your green living program (GLP) for a number of reasons.
Publicity
Building a strong profile will help promote not only the GLP but also the issues you are trying to address. If students are familiar with the program, they will likely think of recycling, energy conservation and sustainability when they hear its name. The more publicity you get for the GLP, the more support you will build.
Legitimacy
Building a strong profile can add legitimacy to your program. Because your program will be new, consider linking with existing groups that already have a profile on campus. The more well known your program becomes, the more accepted your efforts will be in the mainstream and campus cultures.
Community of Interest Creates a Community of Support
Building a strong profile can result in a large number of students, staff and faculty becoming interested in the efforts of your program. A community of interested people translates into a supportive community. Regardless of whether the community members become directly involved in your efforts, having them positioned throughout campus as sustainability supporters will contribute to the program’s success.
Funding
Building a strong profile for your program could result in additional funding from departments on campus, grant organizations, alums or other donors.
Sharing the Glory
If your GLP receives media coverage or runs a large event, be sure to credit the many people who supported your efforts. For example, if your program is covered in the campus newspaper, you should mention the name of your host organization to the reporter. If a particular event is sponsored by an individual funder or steering group member, then give credit to that person or group on all publicity and marketing materials, such as posters and emails. If you receive donations for a particular event, be sure to give credit to the sponsoring businesses. Your sponsors, students and other supporters all deserve the credit, so be sure to share the glory and spread word of their good deeds!
