Funding the Manager

As previously mentioned, one method of getting the manager position for your student internship program (SIP) is to expand or redirect the function of an existing staff position. Another option is to establish a new position. Either way, the funding options include the following:

  • The college or university may agree to reallocate existing hours to SIP management and therefore add no new staff costs.
  • In addition to university funding, financial support could come from a donor or grant.
  • You could include the cost of the SIP manager's salary and administrative overhead in the budgets presented to internship sponsors.

The Harvard Green Campus Initiative initially allocated existing staff hours but later recouped some fraction of these costs by including them in the budgets proposed to intern sponsors.
