Defining Work Plans

Defining Work PlansThe process of defining an internship work plan happens in collaboration with potential sponsors. Generating ideas and narrowing down areas of relevance and interest need to occur in conversations with the people that have the ability to ultimately fund the work. It may help to look at the different kinds of internships run on other campuses. It will definitely help to become thoroughly acquainted with the kind of work the potential sponsors are currently doing and on which they might be interested in building.

Once you have established a general internship project idea that is appealing to a potential sponsor, it is helpful to move quickly in drafting a one- to two-page work plan that includes the following:

  • project description
  • deliverables
  • advisory group participants
  • timeline
  • management roles and responsibilities
  • intern location
  • budget

The next step is to get the sponsor to review, edit (if necessary) and give the final sign-off on the budget request.
