In my dorm: Heating & Cooling

Tips

  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing.
  • In the winter, draw your curtains shut during at night.
  • In the summer, draw your curtains shut during the day.
  • Keep the heating units free of clutter and clear of furniture to allow for proper flow of air and heat.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs, instead of incandescent bulbs that give off most energy as heat.

You can also view these pictures of your dorm heating controls with detailed instructions.

McCulloch Hall For heating and cooling, residents have a thermostat. Please use our guidelines for energy conservation and comfort.
Chase & Morris For heating and cooling, residents have a knob with “warmer” and “cooler” options, as well as a fan coil unit. Please use our guidelines for energy conservation and comfort.
Hamilton & Gallatin For heating and cooling, residents have a thermostat with an occupancy sensor. Please use our guidelines for energy conservation and comfort.

Temperature Guidelines

A thermostat controls the temperature in your room. Even small adjustments of just one or two degrees in temp settings can result in large energy savings!

A fan coil unit controls the speed and air flow (low, medium, high) in your room. A small motor runs the fan; save electricity by running your fan on low.

WINTER months (Nov – Mar)
When you are in the room 68–71 degrees
When out for the day 60–65 degrees
When away for the weekend 60 degrees
SUMMER months (June – Sept)
When you are in the room 74–78 degrees
When out for the day 80 degrees
When away for the weekend 80 degrees

*Note that you should leave the fan on low during the winter (not off).
