Sustainability at Harvard

Recycling Off-Campus

Boston (which includes Allston) and Cambridge have great recycling programs that make it easy for residents to reduce their waste. Both cities also provide guidelines for composting at home and offer residents composting bins at a subsidized rate. Review the below links for recycling guides that detail what can and cannot be recycled in your community and the proper way to recycle these items.

Boston Recycling

Boston recycling is now single stream, meaning you don’t have to separate your recyclables for your curbside recycling!

Cambridge Recycling

Cambridge recycling is not single stream; recyclables need to be separated for your curbside recycling program (paper/cardboard separate from glass/plastic/metals). Quit complaining, it’s not that difficult! Review the guidelines for recycling mixed paper and cardboard and metals, glass and plastics in Cambridge.

Cambridge now offers a composting drop-off center that accepts food waste from residents! For those that want to learn how to compost at home, composting workshops are also offered through Cambridge recycling.
