The Harvard Medical School sustainable dining program was awarded "Best Menu" by Food Management magazine recently. Two of the features noted in the article were compostable food containers and consistent use of local produce.

On July 8, President Faust issued a statement on the new report by the Harvard Greenhouse Gas Task Force. In her statement, she announced intention to proceed with several recommendations from the Task Force. Among others, these include: the pursuit of a comprehensive program to reduce Harvard's emissions, with a primary emphasis on Harvard's own operations; a short-term goal of a 30% reduction of emissions below 2006 levels by 2016; the establishment of administration and staff support to meet the goals; and commitment to sustainability teaching and research to generate knowledge that can benefit the rest of the world.

Harvard earns an A-, the highest grade earned in 2008, on the Sustainable Endowments Institute's Green Report Card. The other 5 recipients are Dartmouth, the University of Washington, Middlebury, Carleton College and the University of Vermont. HGCI Director Leith Sharp was quoted in a related Forbes Magazine article on "America's Greenest Colleges."

HGCI staffer Dara Olmsted and Jason Luke, Associate Director at Facilities Maintenance Operations, wrote up Harvard's Green Cleaning Program for "The Green Campus," a recently published book edited by Walter Simpson of SUNY Buffalo.

From November to March, occupants and managers of 13 buildings in FAS competed in areas like recycling and energy use reduction. The energy savings from the event lightened the FAS bottom line by $72,472!
