HRES Staff

To guide all efforts, the HGCI works with the HRES Sustainable Buildings Steering Group. This group meets regularly to advise in the development and implementation of the HRES Sustainable Building Program.

Over the course of the Program, almost every staff person within the department has directly supported and guided efforts to green HRES. For example:

  • Project managers have incorporated LEED or EnergyStar into over 8 building and renovation projects
  • Engineering and financial staff have supported and processed over $200,000 of green campus loans for energy conservation projects, resulting in annual energy savings of $38,000, rebates of over $77,000 and greenhouse gas reduction of over 500,000 pounds of CO2
  • Procurement staff have supported a switch to a myriad of environmentally preferred products including 100% recycled office paper, recycled content paper towels, recycled content plastic bin liners, remanufactured toner cartridges, low VOC paints, energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, etc
  • Geothermal energy supply is now under consideration for 3 buildings
  • General staff have contributed to increased recycling rates for paper, glass containers, fluorescent light tubes, batteries, carpet, discarded computers and furniture
  • Planning staff have worked to incorporate sustainability objectives into campus planning efforts
  • Environmental procurement guidelines and green renovation standards have been drafted.
  • Building Managers are engaged in active peer-to-peer training initiatives to enhance organizational learning for high performance building operations.

Harvard Real Estate Services continues to fund the services offered by the HGCI to the tune of around $95,000 per year. Four HRES departmental working groups continue to meet on a regular basis to digest and direct these efforts.
