LEED-CI, Innovation in Design

The links below provide a Roadmap outlining an ideal process by which to achieve each goal, as well as model Harvard LEED submittals, information on design intent and sustainability principles, financial considerations, LEED requirements, and additional resources for each innovation and design element..

ID1.1-1.4 Innovation in Design

Design Intent and Sustainability Principles

The intent of these credits is to give projects the opportunity to be awarded points for exceptional performance above the requirements set by the LEED Green Building Rating System and/or innovative performance in Green Building categories not specifically addressed by the LEED Green Building Rating System.

Design Intent and Sustainability Principles

Harvard's Commuter Choice program supports the first Sustainability Principle, "Demonstrating institutional practices that promote sustainability, including measures to increase efficiency and use of renewable resources, and to decrease production of waste and hazardous materials, both in Harvard’s own operations and in those of its suppliers," by encouraging affiliates to use public transportation.

MODEL SUBMITTALS

Mather Dunster

The Mather Dunster Kitchen Renovation is the first Harvard project to achieve the Innovation and Design credit for Expanded Recycling, which accounts for 6.5 times more recycling by weight than basic recycling.  Harvard University Dining Services installed a Somat Pulper with a hydra-extractor and currently recovers an average of five 30-gallon barrels per day, each containing 200 pounds of organic waste, or 1000 pounds per day, or 244,000 pounds per year.

HUDS waste vegetable oil is being collected in a 150 gallon stainless steel containment tank. The tank allows fueling of diesel trucks that have been converted to run on SVO.  Facilities Maintenance Organization (FMO) has one recycling truck running on the SVO from Dunster Mather Dining Hall, and hopes to have more running on it soon. The aggressive composting program at Dunster Mather doubles the amount of waste that is recycled.

For this credit, vegetable oil or the composting of grass clippings, leaf rakings and wood chips was not included. An ID 1.1 CIR ruling dated 9/6/2005 states that landscape waste cannot be included in the recycling value, as it is standard practice to divert yard waste from the landfill.
