The amount of recycled content in steel is dependant upon the process used in manufacturing it: which is either the basic oxygen furnace (BOF), which uses 25-35% old steel to make new steel; or the electric arc furnace (EAF), which uses 95-100% old steel to make new steel. A default recycled content of 25% post consumer can be used in the LEED calculations for MR Credit 4.1: Recycled Content, for steel products where no recycled content information is given. An asterisk (*) is indicated for those products used at Harvard.
